What is a vertical micro drama?

A vertical micro drama is a scripted series filmed for a phone held upright, in 9:16, and told in very short episodes, usually a minute or two each, that open on a problem and end on a cliffhanger. Viewers typically watch the first episodes free on apps such as ReelShort or DramaBox and pay to unlock the rest. With agent-media you can make the same format with AI, in episodes of 15 to 60 seconds.

Where the name comes from

Vertical is the frame: tall, 9 by 16, the shape of a phone screen, so nobody has to turn the phone. Micro is the episode: far shorter than a TV episode. eMarketer describes microdramas as serialized scripted shows delivered in vertical video episodes of roughly 1 to 2 minutes. Subscription Insider (July 20, 2026) calls them one- and two-minute serialized stories.

You will see the same thing called a short drama, a vertical drama, a mini drama or a microdrama. They all mean a series of short vertical episodes built to be watched one after another.

How it differs from a TV show and a clip

A TV episode has room for subplots, slow scenes and a cold open. A micro drama episode has room for one thing: a problem, one turn and a question. Each episode is closer to the last two minutes of a TV episode than to a whole one.

A micro drama is also not a one-off clip. It is serialized: the same characters, the same places and a story that carries from one episode to the next. Subscription Insider notes that a complete story may run across dozens of installments. That continuity is what separates a series from a feed of unrelated videos.

What is inside one episode

Night Shift, episode 1, runs 21 seconds and shows the whole format in miniature:

  • The hook, in the first second: “Room Four has no patient file.” A problem you can see and read on mute.
  • The push: the doctor tells her to leave it alone.
  • The turn: the bed was empty yesterday, and tonight he is responsible for it.
  • The cliffhanger: “His wristband has your name.” A question episode 2 opens on.

The stories micro dramas tell

The format favors stories with a fast power shift: revenge, hidden identities, contract marriages, betrayal and comeback, and romances across a gap in money or status, such as a CEO and an assistant. Each one can turn in a single line, which is all an episode has room for.

The shows on our series page cover revenge, romance, crime and mystery, office drama and sitcoms, and some are not in English: Seoul Contract is in Korean, Berlin Nights in German and Última Llamada in Spanish.

Where people watch them

Most viewing happens in dedicated apps. eMarketer names ReelShort, owned by Crazy Maple Studio, and DramaBox, and says the apps use freemium models that mix paid episode unlocks with advertising. Creators and studios also post episodes on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, where the vertical frame is native.

You can watch our own shows on the agent-media series page. The first three episodes of every show are free, with no app to install.

How micro dramas are made

A studio micro drama is made like a small film: a script, a casting call, a shoot and an edit. The shortness changes the writing more than the process: every line has to earn its seconds.

With AI, one person can do the same job from a chat. With agent-media you type an idea into Claude, ChatGPT or Codex, answer a short interview, then read the season plan and the episode 1 script with its price and say yes once. The cast of two fictional adult leads and up to six friends or rivals is created, and each later episode is one more approval. Each episode comes back in 9:16 at 480p or 720p, with captions, a score and the same cast every time.

Questions

Why are micro dramas vertical?

Because they are made for phones. A 9:16 frame fills the screen without turning the phone, and it fits the feeds of TikTok, Reels and Shorts.

How long is a micro drama episode?

Usually about one to two minutes on the big apps. Episodes made with agent-media run 15 to 60 seconds, and the shows on our series page run about 21 to 45 seconds each.

Is a micro drama the same as a short drama?

Yes, in practice. Short drama, vertical drama, mini drama and micro drama all name the same format: a series of short vertical episodes, each ending on a hook.

Can I make my own vertical micro drama?

Yes. agent-media writes, casts and films one from Claude, ChatGPT or Codex. Plans start at $49 a month for 300 seconds at 480p, enough for ten 30-second episodes. There is no free trial.
