Cliffhanger examples from real episodes
A cliffhanger is an ending that leaves a question the viewer needs answered, so they watch the next episode. The strongest are short: a reveal, a threat or a deadline in six words or fewer. Below are the last lines of seven episodes we filmed for our own short dramas, each named by type, from “I bought the building.” to “Same flowers. Different bride.”, then the rules we write them with.
Seven cliffhangers, as filmed
Each one is the last line of episode 1 of one of our shows. Read them alone: every one works without the episode before it, because it asks a question.
- The Second Key: “I bought the building.” A reversal. The boss who fired Claire on Monday now pays her rent. What does she do with the building?
- Boss Lady: “Those proxies expire at six.” A ticking clock. The intern holds the board for a few hours. What happens at six?
- Night Shift: “His wristband has your name.” A partial reveal. A patient with no file wears the doctor's name. Who is he, and what did the doctor do?
- The Body Double: “Then tell me who I’m marrying.” A partial reveal, as a question. The fiancé has noticed the heiress is not herself.
- Last Delivery: “That receipt calls you the thief.” A betrayal reveal. The client who hired the courier has framed him.
- The One I Left: “Same flowers. Different bride.” A reveal. He is ordering the flowers she wanted, for his wedding to someone else.
- Runway: “We pivot to postcards.” A sitcom ending. In a comedy the cliffhanger is the next bad idea, and episode 2 opens on it.
Five kinds of cliffhanger
Most dramatic cliffhangers fall into five types. A season should not use the same one for more than two episodes running, or the viewer learns to expect it.
Our own first episodes show the mix. The Second Key ends on a reversal and Boss Lady on a ticking clock. Night Shift, The Body Double and The One I Left end on partial reveals, and Last Delivery on a betrayal.
- Partial reveal: half a secret comes out, and the other half is the next episode.
- Reversal setup: whoever won the scene is about to lose.
- Intrusion: someone walks in who should not be there.
- Ticking clock: a deadline lands, and the next episode is the countdown.
- Betrayal reveal: an ally turns out to be on the other side.
How to write a cliffhanger
Write the last line first. Keep it to six words or fewer, and make it a reveal or a threat, never a summary. Then work backward: place the turn of the episode between 55% and 75% of its running time, leave room for one reaction, and end two seconds earlier than feels safe, on the strongest face.
The next episode opens on the answer, or on a step toward it, with no recap. The viewer remembers the question; that is why they came back.
- Does the last line ask a question nobody answers in this episode?
- Is it six words or fewer?
- Is it a different type from the last two episodes' endings?
- Does it read on mute, from the captions alone?
