Micro drama apps: where to watch, and what is free
Micro drama apps are phone apps built for one format: scripted series in short vertical episodes, watched one after another. The two our sources name are ReelShort, owned by Crazy Maple Studio, and DramaBox. Both use a freemium model: the first episodes are free, and the rest are unlocked with coins, by watching ads or with a subscription. You can also watch the format on TikTok, Reels and Shorts, or in a browser on the agent-media series page, where episodes 1 to 3 of every show are free.
What a micro drama app is
A micro drama app is a streaming app for one kind of show. eMarketer describes microdramas as serialized scripted shows delivered in vertical video episodes of roughly 1 to 2 minutes, and the apps are built around that shape: the picture fills a phone held upright, and the next episode is one swipe away when the last one ends on its cliffhanger.
That makes them different from a general video app. A feed on TikTok mixes clips from thousands of people. A micro drama app keeps you inside one story, with the same characters in every episode, until the season ends or you stop watching.
The apps our sources name
Two apps come up in coverage of the format. eMarketer names ReelShort, owned by Crazy Maple Studio, and DramaBox, and describes both as using freemium models that mix paid episode unlocks with advertising.
ReelShort also appears in deals with traditional media. Subscription Insider (July 20, 2026) reports, citing Business Insider, that Peacock licensed 10 microdramas from ReelShort as a short-term test, and that Telemundo reworked its series Armas de Mujer into 123 two-minute episodes for ReelShort.
Other apps sell the same format. This guide names only the apps our sources name, and it does not rank or price them, because we have not checked their catalogs or prices ourselves.
Are micro drama apps free?
Partly. Subscription Insider describes how viewers move through these apps: they watch several episodes free, then some buy coins to unlock the next episode, while others watch ads to unlock it or pay for a subscription. eMarketer sums up the same model as freemium, mixing paid episode unlocks with advertising.
So the opening of a series costs nothing, and the rest costs coins, time spent on ads or a subscription. Writers plan for that moment: in our own playbook, the last free episode carries the highest tension of the season so far. Prices differ by app and by series, so check the price inside the app before you buy coins.
Watching micro dramas without an app
You do not need a dedicated app to watch the format. Creators and studios also post episodes on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, where the 9:16 frame is native.
agent-media is a micro drama website rather than an app. Our series page plays every show in the browser, on a phone or a computer, with nothing to install, and episodes 1 to 3 of every show are free. The shows cover revenge, romance, crime and mystery, office drama and sitcoms, and some are not in English: Seoul Contract is in Korean, Berlin Nights in German and Última Llamada in Spanish.
What to check before you pay in an app
A few questions are worth answering before the first unlock:
- How many episodes are free, and whether the free count is the same for every series.
- What one unlock costs in coins or in ads, and whether a subscription covers the whole series.
- How long the series is. Subscription Insider notes that a complete story may run across dozens of installments.
- Whether the show also plays in a browser, if you would rather not install another app.
Making your own micro drama instead
The apps sell series made by studios. If you have a story of your own, you can make a series in the same format with AI. With agent-media you type the idea into Claude, ChatGPT or Codex, answer a short interview, and approve the season plan and the episode 1 script with its price before anything is filmed.
Episodes come back in 9:16, from 15 to 60 seconds, at 480p or 720p, with captions, no watermark and the same cast in every episode: the vertical shape that TikTok, Reels and Shorts are built for. Episode 1 of your own show is $1, and a micro drama of ten 30-second episodes at 480p is $49 one-time.
